2023 Winnebago EKKO: complaints, problems and recalls

In 2023 Winnebago and Ford introduced a new blind spot monitoring system because the old one would fail so easily. However the new one does not work at all, and both Ford and Winnebago point fingers at each other saying it's each others fault and both sides refuse to service or even look into it. This is widespread, possibly affecting every single 2023 based EKKO.

Blind spot monitoring failed, no longer works at all. Vehicle is 9 months old and 13,000 miles. This has been a very common occurrence with the last two Ekko model years. I have a 2023 Ekko on a 2022 Ford Transit Chassis. The blind spot monitoring is provided and installed by Winnebago, in 2023 Ford Chassis models Ford provides the blind spot monitoring system. Blind Spot warning has never worked since delivery in May, picks up bushes and fences but not cars. I am attaching a poll that was done in our Facebook group that was just for the 2023 EKKOs, there are so many others that originally had this problem.

The balmar regulator/ 2nd alternator is failing and presenting a fire hazard based off of Winnebago’s own reports and other owners who have experienced fires to their Ekkos. Because of this we have had to spend a considerable amount of money getting another safe charger option (dc - dc charger wired properly and safely unlike winnebagos 2nd alternator/balmar regulator) from the primary alternator installed since we cannot rely on or use the 2nd alternator with the balmar regulator without threat of fire, serious injury, or possible death. When we purchased our EKKO in Sep 2022, the blind spot monitoring system worked, notifying us by beeping & lights on the sides of the cab if cars were in the blind spot areas. Approximately 2-3 months after we took EKKO possession, the notifications from the blind spot monitoring system stopped. Winnebago has acknowledged the problem, changing the BSM system in some newer models. We have an upcoming dealer appointment for attempted repair.

The Balmar alternator gets very hot and emits very loud high-pitched whine. Others who have reported this heat/sound without further action have reported the alternator has caught on fire.

In August 2023 while driving at highway speed - without warning - a loud screeching suddenly began from the left front wheel of our 2023 Winnebago EKKO RV (built on a 2022 Ford Transit 3500 AWD chassis) - fearing a potential brake failure I took the vehicle to a mechanic who discovered a bolt from the brake heat shield had detached and was lodged between the brake caliper and rotor, the bolt had scored the rotor - the mechanic dislodged the bolt and stated he had to bend the heat shield slightly to prevent it rubbing. Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Ekko vehicles. The quick disconnect fittings in the LP gas system may be cracked, causing a gas leak.

Consequence: A gas leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the quick disconnect fittings, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 22, 2022. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885.

Reported: 2023-02-03 (February 3, 2023)

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Solis, 2021-2023 Travato, and 2022-2023 Ekko motorhomes, equipped with certain Suburban Manufacturing Company (Suburban) SDS2 2-Burner Drop-in Cooktops with part number 3032AST. The internal aluminum burner tubes that connect to the gas valves may fracture and cause a gas leak.

Consequence: A gas leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Winnebago will work with Suburban to repair the cooktop, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2023. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885.

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Ekko motorhomes. The 12-Volt charging system may have improperly routed wires and loose electrical connections, which can overload the electrical circuits and cause damage to electrical components, including the auxiliary alternator.

Consequence: Overloaded electrical circuits that damage components increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and correct the wire routing and electrical connections, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 30, 2023. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885. Winnebago's number for this recall is 174.

Reported: 2023-04-28 (April 28, 2023)

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Travato, 2021-2023 Solis, and 2022-2023 Ekko motorhomes, equipped with certain Cummins Onan QG 2800i, and Onan QG 2800i EVAP generator sets. The fuel hose between the fuel filter and Injection Pump Module (IPM) may not be properly secured, which can cause a gas leak.

Consequence: A gas leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel hose and clamps, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 2, 2023. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885.

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Ekko motorhomes. The blind spot monitoring system may fail without warning to the driver.

Consequence: Without a functioning blind spot monitoring system, the driver may be unaware of a vehicle in their blind spot, which can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will install a new blind spot monitoring system, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 16, 2024. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885.

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Ekko motorhomes. The solar charging system was incorrectly designed without sufficient over-current protection, which can allow the circuit to overheat and melt the fuse.

Consequence: A melted fuse increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the solar controller fuse and components, as necessary free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-3535. Winnebago's number for this recall is 186.

Reported: 2026-04-22 (April 22, 2026)

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2022-2027 Ekko motorhomes. The touchscreen display may register unintended or phantom inputs and turn on the generator without the operator's knowledge.

Consequence: People in an enclosed space, such as a garage, with a running generator may be at an increased risk of injury or death from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside until the repair has been performed. Winnebago will release an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge.
