MY VEHICLE WAS RECALL FOR STRUT FAILURE ON THE REAR LIFT GATE. THE RECALL REPAIR WAS COMPLETED MID 2017. RECENTLY THE STRUTS FAILED. THE CARR WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR AND IT WOULDN'T STAY UP. MAZDA IS UNWILLING TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PARTS (WITHOUT CHARGE) STATING THE PART IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW AND IT CURRENTLY HAS 18,500 MILES IN THE ODOMETER. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN GENTLY USED AND THIS PART SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED SO QUICKLY. IT IS POOR PRACTICE TO REPLACE ONE DEFECTIVE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFE…

MY 2015 MAZDA5 WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE HIGH SPEED ROLLOVER CRASH WITH 4 KIDS IN IT. THEY WERE ON A DEAD END ROAD THAT RAN PARALLEL TO A DIVIDED HIGHWAY. UPON THE INITIAL IMPACT THE FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE THEN ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES, LANDING DRIVERS SIDE DOWN 150-200 FEET FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT. NEITHER SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS VISIBLY TWISTED. ALSO MY SONS SEATBELT CAME UNDONE ON IMPACT, RESULTING IN SEVERAL CRITICAL INJURIES THAT REQUIRED HIM TO BE AIRLIFTED TO A CHILDREN'S TRAUMA CENTER. LOSS OF POWER STEERING AT RANDOM TIMES.SRS LIGHT COMES ON AND POWER STEERING LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING. YOU HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT FOR IT TO WORK AGAIN. IT'S VERY SCARY NOT KNOWING WHEN THIS WILL RANDOMLY HAPPEN AS YOUR DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I SEE WHERE OLDER MODELS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR STEERING BUT NOT NEWER ONES.

Owner report 11528271 · 2023-06-22 (June 22, 2023)

Weld failure can cause the board to tip and dump the user on the ground. This is a hazard because this piece of equipment is design for disabled users who can't stand. User found the cracked weld before it broke completely. The board was sagging from horizontal. I notified the manufacturer, then had the part repaired by a local fabricator. I have pictures showing the failure.

Owner report 11749221 · 2026-07-08 (July 8, 2026)

The handle on the sliding door and driver's side broke off. We have replaced it twice already and it keeps breaking. This has not happened to me with any of my other cars in the past or present until now. It's unkown to me and it shows the part was not done well. What caught my attention is that I saw another mazda5 minivan without a handle which made me think that this is a problem with this type of car. I'm surprised it doesn't have a recall. Please help us with this. Thank you.

Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

16V644000 · Structure:Body:Hatchback/Liftgate

Reported: 2016-09-06 (September 6, 2016)

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 vehicles manufactured November 18, 2008, to June 8, 2013, 2012-2015 Mazda5 vehicles manufactured October 26, 2010, to June 22, 2015, 2016 CX-3 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2015, to December 26, 2015, and 2013-2016 CX-5 vehicles manufactured December 15, 2011, to December 26, 2015. On the affected vehicles, the lift gate support struts may corrode, possibly causing the struts to break and/or the lift gate to drop unexpectedly.

Consequence: If the lift gate falls unexpectedly, it may hit the user, increasing their risk of injury.

Remedy: Mazda dealers will replace the both lift gate supports, free of charge, however parts are not currently available. The recall began April 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 9916H.
