BMW MOTORCYCLE: ENGINE STALLING, DYING, AT IDLE OR DURING SLOW GEAR CHANGE, DOWNSHIFT, AFTER ENGINE IS FULLY WARMED UP, ONGOING PROBLEM EVEN AFTER DEALER TRIED TO FIX. SEVERAL SIMILAR REPORTS ON BMW RIDERS FORUM. CAUSES UNSAFE OPERATION IF STALLING ON TURN, OR AT INTERSECTION. HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID CRASH AND GET OFF HIGHWAY SO FAR. CONTINUES TO STALL INTERMITTENTLY. NO APPARENT RHYME OR REASON, BUT ALWAYS AFTER BIKE HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, FULLY WARMED UP. I AM WRITING YOU TO PLEASE URGE INVESTIGATION OF ALL BMW F800S AND F800ST MOTORCYCLES. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING A PROBLEM WITH THESE MOTORCYCLES SINCE I PURCHASED MY 2007 F800S FOR THE FIRST TIME IN JUNE OF 2009. SOON AFTER I PURCHASED THE MOTORCYCLE, MY REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED CAUSING A SEVERE WOBBLE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BEARING AND ECCENTRIC AXLE WHICH THEY SAY WAS "IMPROVED" WITH A HARDER STEEL IN THE AXLE. FAST FORWARD JUST OVER A YEAR LATER (12/2/10) MY REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED AGAIN. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SAME EXACT DEALER AND THEY …

THE MOTOR ON MY 2007 BMW F800S STARTED KNOCKING IN THE SPRING OF 2011. THIS IS APPROX 6 MONTHS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. I BROUGHT THE BIKE IN TO THE DEALER. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS FINE. THIS PROCESS WAS REPEATED TWO MORE TIMES. FINALLY THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED AND DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER FOUND COMPLETE PISTON FAILURE (PISTON SLAP). THE PISTON SKIRT WAS GRINDING INTO THE CYLINDER WALL. BOTH THE PISTONS AND BARRELS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE BIKE. BASED ON VISUAL EVIDENCE OF THE DAMAGE I HAVE FOUND A…

Recall history
2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
08V241000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Delivery:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings
Reported: 2008-06-02 (June 2, 2008)
BMW IS RECALLING 1,980 MY 2007-2008 F800 S AND F800 ST MOTORCYCLES. DUE TO THE ROUTING OF THE FUEL TANK BREATHER HOSE, PRESSURE EQUALIZATION INSIDE THE FUEL TANK IS POSSIBLE ONLY TO A LIMITED EXTENT. CONSEQUENTLY, AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE FUEL TANK CAN DEFORM. IF THIS HAPPENED AT THE POINT WHERE THE FUEL TANK IS SHAPED TO PROVIDE CLEARANCE FOR THE REAR WHEEL, THEN, IN COMBINATION WITH A LARGE PAYLOAD, THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK COULD RUB AGAINST THE REAR WHEEL.
Consequence: IF THIS OCCURRED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A LEAK COULD DEVELOP IN THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REROUTE THE FUEL TANK BREATHER HOSE. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING AUGUST 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-331-1117.

Reported: 2008-07-25 (July 25, 2008)
BMW IS RECALLING 428 MY 2007 F800 S, F800 ST, R1200 R, K1200 S, K1200 R, K1200 R SPORT, AND K1200 GT MOTORCYCLES. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE COATING TO SEPARATE FROM THE INSIDE FACE OF THE STEERING DAMPER HOUSING. IF THIS HAPPENED, THE COATING COULD PARTIALLY CLOG THE OIL BORES WITHIN THE DAMPER.
Consequence: IF THIS OCCURRED, THE STEERING DAMPER COULD BECOME STIFF INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING DAMPER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING SEPTEMBER 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
