Owner report 10553483 · 2013-11-22 (November 22, 2013)
I GOT MY NEW 2013 BMW 335I IN FEB OF THIS YEAR AND SO FAR HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN 2 COLLISIONS DUE TO WHAT I CONSIDER AS A "BRAKE FAILURE". BOTH ACCIDENTS HAPPEN AT SLOW TO MEDIUM SPEED [25 - 40MPH] AND BOTH TIMES THE CAR JUST KEPT ROLLING AND IT FELT LIKE THE ABS SYSTEM WAS JUST NOT WORKING. I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED AS I HAVE BEEN DRIVING BMW'S FOR THE PAST 6+ YEARS AND NONE OF MY PREVIOUS CARS (2006 330I AND 2008 X5) HAD ANY BRAKING ISSUES AND THEY WOULD STOP WHEN NEEDED. ALTHOUGH THESE ACCIDENTS WEREN'T OF VERY SERIOUS NATURE BUT THEY SCREWED …

THE CAR GOES INTO "LIMP MODE" WHILE DRIVING REDUCING POWER IMMEDIATELY. I WAS MAKING A TURN ONTO A STREET CROSSING A HIGHWAY AND MY CAR WENT INTO THIS LIMP MODE. I WAS ALMOST HIT DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. SYMPTOMS: 1) LOSS OF POWER AND CAR WILL NOT REV. PAST ~3,000 RPM (NO FAULT CODES ON DASH) 2) RADIATOR ELECTRIC COOLING FAN ON MAX (VERY LOUD) 3) ENGINE OIL TEMP. APPROX. 205 DEGF OR LOWER (WHILE LIMP MODE IS OCCURRING, TEMP. IS USUALLY NOT AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMP OF 245 DEGF) THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY ONCE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND BA…

RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT OR INSIDE OF DASH UPON ACCELERATION (2000-2500RPM) ON COLD STARTS. CAN CHANGE NOISE BASED UPON ACCELERATION. GOES AWAY AFTER MOTOR WARMS UP (USUALLY 15 MINUTES) SO GETTING DIAGNOSED AT THE DEALER IS DIFFICULT. REPEATEDLY GET "CAN'T REPRODUCE PROBLEM" BACK FROM THE DEALER. WIDESPREAD PROBLEM ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS (2012+ 3 SERIES, 2014+ 4 SERIES). *TR

Owner report 10565341 · 2014-02-21 (February 21, 2014)
"LIMP MODE" IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE AFFECTING 2012-2014 BMW 335I MODELS WITH THE M SPORT PACKAGE. AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A STOP TO 60-65 MPH, AND MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, I EXPERIENCED LIMP MODE. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, THE RPMS WOULD NOT RISE ABOVE 2500 OR FALL BELOW 2000. THE OIL TEMPERATURE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200 DEGREES. DURING THE SUDDEN LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND POWER, NO MATTER HOW HARD OR FAR I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE- THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST ALL POWER AND THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. AS I WAS COASTING, I…

Reported: 2015-08-17 (August 17, 2015)
BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 320i, 320xi, 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi, and ActiveHybrid3 vehicles manufactured October 20, 2011, to June 22, 2015, 2014-2015 328xi Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured March 21, 2013, to March 17, 2015, 2014-2015 328d, 328xd vehicles manufactured June 28, 2013, to April 21, 2015, and 2014-2015 328xd Sports Wagon vehicles manufactured July 5, 2013, to April 21, 2015. The affected vehicles may have been programmed with new software that inadvertently makes the front side marker lights inoperative in conjunction with the parking lights or the headlights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Consequence: If the side marker lights do not illuminate, the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will upload revised software to correct the issue, free of charge. The recall began on October 7, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or by email at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
