Owner report 10235514 · 2008-07-23 (July 23, 2008)

AFTER RUNNING FOR A COUPLE HOURS IN HEAT, THE BIKE WILL STALL ANYTIME RPM'S FALL TO IDLE SPEEDS. THERE SEEMS AT THESE TIMES TO BE A BUILDUP OF EXCESS PRESSURE IN THE FUEL TANK BECAUSE REMOVING THE CAP WILL CAUSE AN OUTWARD FLOW OF AIR FROM THE TANK. OCCASIONALLY THIS FLOW IS STRONG ENOUGH TO FLIP THE FUEL CAP OUT OF MY HAND AS I REMOVE IT. LEAVING THE CAP NOT FULLY SECURED SEEMS TO PREVENT BOTH THE FUEL STARVATION AND THE BUILDUP OF PRESSURE. *TR

FUEL LINE LEAK. AN IN-TANK FUEL LINE BETWEEN THE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER IS MISSING HOSE CLAMPS CAUSING FUEL PRESSURE LOSE AND ERRATIC ENGINE PERFORMANCE. STALLING AND SPUTTERING DURING MANEUVERS IN TRAFFIC CAN BE BEING VERY DANGEROUS ON A MOTORCYCLE OR ANY TWO WHEEL VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM EFFECTS 2007 THROUGH 2008 APRILIA SCARABEO 500IE AND EARLIER YEAR MODELS. THUS FAR DEALERS HAVE CORRECTED THIS UNDER WARRANTY ON A BY COMPLAINT BASES. MOST OF THESE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED IN THE FIRST 1000 MILES. AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW. I FEEL THE MANUFACTU…

AN IN-TANK FUEL LINE BETWEEN THE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER IS MISSING HOSE CLAMPS CAUSING A LOSS OF FUEL PRESSURE, ERRATIC IDLING, AND ERRATIC ENGINE PERFORMANCE. ENGINE FREQUENTLY STALLS AND SPUTTERS DURING MANEUVERS IN TRAFFIC, ESPECIALLY BRAKING TO A STOP OR CORNERING. THIS PROBLEM EFFECTS 2007 THROUGH 2008 APRILIA SCARABEO 500IE AND EARLIER YEAR MODELS. MY DEALER HAS AGREED TO CORRECT THIS FOR ME, BUT IT IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW. I FEEL THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. *TR

ENGINE STALLING, DIFFICULT STARTING AND ROUGH IDLING ISSUES DUE TO INTERNAL FUEL LINK LEAKAGE. STARTED TO HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY AFTER AROUND 700 MILES. THE SCOOTER WAS BOUGHT NEW FROM DEALER AND CURRENT MILEAGE IS ABOUT 2500 MILES. *TR

AN IN-TANK FUEL LINE BETWEEN THE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER IS MISSING HOSE CLAMPS CAUSING FUEL PRESSURE LOSS AND ERRATIC ENGINE PERFORMANCE. THE FUEL LINE IS ALSO MADE OF A CLEAR PLASTIC MATERIAL WHICH IS NOT RATED FOR CONTINUOUS EXPOSURE TO GASOLINE/ETHANOL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TUBING. STALLING AND SPUTTERING DURING MANEUVERS IN TRAFFIC CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS ON A MOTORCYCLE OR ANY TWO WHEEL VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS 2007 THROUGH 2008 APRILIA SCARABEO 500IE AND EARLIER YEAR MODELS. THUS FAR DEALERS HAVE CORRECTED THIS UNDER WARRANTY ON A BY …

Owner report 10235986 · 2008-07-28 (July 28, 2008)

THE APRILIA SCARABEO HAS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE SUBMERSIBLE FUEL LINE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE HOSE IS HELD ON BY FRICTION INSTEAD OF CLAMPS WHICH OVER TIME CAUSES PRESSURE LEAKS WHICH LEADS TO STALLING IN TRAFFIC. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN WELL KNOWN SINCE 2006 AT LEAST. IT IS A RELATIVELY SIMPLE FIX THAT ONLY REQUIRES THREE INCHES OF HOSE AND TWO SCREW CLAMPS, OH, AND A QUALIFIED MECH TO DO THE WORK. I THINK APRILIA SHOULD DO A RECALL SO WE USERS CAN HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED BEFORE WE GET HURT OR KILLED. *TR

Owner report 10236406 · 2008-07-30 (July 30, 2008)

I, ALONG WITH OTHERS, OWN A 2007 APRILIA SCARABEO 500IE. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THIS SCOOTER THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND STALL CREATING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN CORRECTED BUT IT SHOULD BE KNOWN THAT THIS PROBLEM IS SERIOUS AND APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM ON EVERY SINGLE SCOOTER PRODUCED. IT IS A SIMPLE FIX BUT IT IS A GRASSROOTS KNOWN FACT AND MOVEMENT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR

08V522000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Delivery

Reported: 2008-10-07 (October 7, 2008)

PIAGGIO IS RECALLING 850 MY 2006-2008 APRILIA SCARABEO 500 MOTORCYCLES EQUIPPED WITH BITRON SPA FUEL PUMP/FUEL FILTERS. THE FUEL HOSE CONNECTING THE FUEL FILTER TO THE FUEL PUMP/FUEL FILTER MOUNTING FLANGE MAY COME LOOSE. IF THIS CONNECTION IS LOOSE, OR HAS BECOME COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED, THERE WILL BE A DROP, OR LOSS OF, FUEL PRESSURE TO THE ENGINE.

Consequence: A DROP OR LOSS OF FUEL PRESSURE TO THE ENGINE COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL HOSE CLAMPS TO SECURE THE EXISTING FUEL HOSE AT BOTH ENDS TO THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL FILTER. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIAGGIO/APRILIA AT 1-212-380-4431.
