I pulled onto a main road through a busy intersection and shifted through the gears under normal load. Upon shifting from 4th into 5th gear one of the C clips failed causing devastating damage to the transmission gears. The bike jerked and locked up for a moment but I was able to keep it under control and slow down to a stop. There was no warning or symptoms up to this point.
