I OWN A 2007 HARLEY DAVIDSON FXST SOFTAIL MOTORCYCLE. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS IN MY POSSESSION FOR TEN MONTHS WHEN I NOTICED A DRY ROT ON THE SIDE WALL OF THE FRONT TIRE. THE REAR TIRE IS IN GREAT CONDITION, WITH NO DRY ROT AT ALL. I KEEP MY MOTORCYCLE SERVICED AND MAINTAINED CONTINUOUSLY. THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS NEVER LOW, OR DAMAGED IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HARLEY DAVIDSON FXSBSE BREAKOUT MOTORCYCLE (N/A). THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE, THE MOTORCYCLE SUDDENLY STALLED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE MOTORCYCLE HAD ALSO EXPERIENCED HESITATION AND DECELERATION ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE DEFECT WAS CAUSED BY BUFFING COMPOUND RESIDUE INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. 07V173000 · Electrical System:12v/24v/48v Battery:Cables
Reported: 2007-04-26 (April 26, 2007)
CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A CONDITION THAT PERMITS THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TO CONTACT A WELD BEAD ON THE OIL TANK. THIS MAY CAUSE THE WELD BEAD TO ABRADE THROUGH THE INSULATION ON THE CABLE AND CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT FROM THE BATTERY THROUGH THE OIL TANK AND OIL LINES.
Consequence: THIS COULD LEAD TO AN OIL LEAK AND/OR POSSIBLE FIRE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TO THE RIDER.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A BATTERY CADDY THAT WILL PROTECT THE CABLE AND ENSURE PROPER CABLE ROUTING. THIS RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 4, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-342-4080.
