Owner report 10556917 · 2013-12-21 (December 21, 2013)

I HAVE LEASED BRAND NEW 2014 BMW X5 ON 12/09/2013. SUDDENLY AFTER 2 DAYS, IT HAS BROKEN. HEATED STEERING FUNCTION STOPPED WORKING. SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF MY SELLING DEALER KEPT THE VEHICLE OVERNIGHT AND FOUND OUT SOMETHING IS BROKEN AND THE BROKEN PART HAS TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID IT WOULD BE GOING TO TAKE AT LEAST END OF JANUARY 2014(THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD VERBALLY). NEITHER SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE SELLING DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER, GUARANTEE WHEN IT CAN FIX AND REFUSED TO PROVIDE DOCUMENT EVIDENCE ON THAT. RIGHT NOW 2014 BMW X5S ARE ON …

MY VEHICLE HAS SOFT-CLOSE DOORS, AFTER CLOSING THE DOORS THEY POPPED OPEN WHILE DRIVING, NOT FULLY OPEN, ONLY ABOUT A HALF-INCH, ENOUGH TO BE AJAR AND FOR THE OPEN DOOR INDICATOR TO LIGHT UP ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS HAPPENED 4 TIMES IN THE FIRST 5 WEEKS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE AND BMW HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX IT, GIVING IT BACK TO ME EACH TIME WITH THE CLAIM THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. ON ONE OCCASION, AND AS REQUESTED BY THE DEALERSHIP, I DROVE THE CAR BACK WITH AN AJAR DOOR WITHOUT TOUCHING IT OR TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. THE DEA…

MY VEHICLE HAS SOFT-CLOSE DOORS, WHEN I STARTED DRIVING FROM HOME, ALL THE DOORS WERE CLOSED, AND THE DOORS WERE LOCKED. AFTER ABOUT 2 MILES, I SUDDENLY HEARD LOUD NOISE/AIR COMING THROUGH THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR. THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR POPPED OPEN WHILE DRIVING, NOT FULLY OPEN, ONLY A LITTLE TO HEAR THE NOISE AND FOR THE OPEN DOOR INDICATOR TO LIGHT UP ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS HAPPENED WHEN MY KID WAS SITTING IN THE BACK. I HAVE TO PULL OVER SAFELY WITHIN FEW YARDS AND CLOSED THE DOOR MANUALLY. THIS IS DANGEROUS AS MY KIDS SOMETIME SIT LE…

THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE DRIVING A BRAND NEW 2014 BMW X5 ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS (DIFFERENT DAYS) THE DRIVERS DOOR AND THE LEFT REAR PASSENGER DOOR BOTH OPENED WHILE DRIVING. THE DOOR WILL OPEN TO THE POINT THAT I CAN HEAR THE WIND COMING THROUGH THE DOOR. I GET A SIGN ON THE DASH BOARD THAT THE DOOR IS OPEN, INTERIOR LIGHTS GOES ON, HOWEVER, WITHOUT THE AUDIBLE SOUND TO WARN THAT A DOOR IS OPEN. IF I TRY TO PULL ON THE DOOR TO CLOSE IT, IT WILL NOT CLOSE UNLESS I COMPLETELY OPEN THE DOOR AND SLAM IT SHUT. IF I TRY TO PUSH THE DOOR TO OPEN IT …

THE DOORS ON MY BRAND NEW X5 OPEN SLIGHTLY AND BECOME AJAR WHILE DRIVING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE IS A 'THUNK' SOUND AND I CAN HEAR AIR NOISE DUE TO THE SMALL GAP. THIS HAPPENED ON 7/26/14 TO THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. PEDESTRIAN (DAYTIME) WARNING AND AVOIDANCE SYSTEM ACTIVATED SPONTANEOUSLY ON AN EMPTY STREET - THERE WAS NO PEDESTRIAN IN SIGHT AND NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY SUDDENLY BRAKE VIOLENTLY AND A TRUCK RIGHT BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME. I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS IT HAS POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN AGAIN IN A MORE CROWDED STREET. IT IS DISCONCERTING TO DRIVE A CAR THAT MAY SUDDENLY BRAKE WITHOUT WARNING! *TR

Recall history

8 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

14V202000 · Latches/Locks/Linkages

Reported: 2014-04-17 (April 17, 2014)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 X5 SAV vehicles manufactured December 12, 2013, through March 10, 2014, and equipped with the Soft Close Automatic (SCA) option. The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances and when the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child safety lock can disengage.

Consequence: A disengaged child safety lock would allow the rear seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door while the vehicle is parked or in motion, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear side door locks and any affected door locks will be replaced, free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

15V147000 · Air Bags

Reported: 2015-03-13 (March 13, 2015)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35d Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 19, 2014, to February 16, 2015, and 2014-2015 BMW X5 xDrive 35i, X5 sDrive 35i, X5 xDrive 50i, Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) manufactured August 28, 2013, to February 16, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the Head Protection System (HPS) air bag may not be securely connected to the air bag inflator gas generator.

Consequence: Without a secure connection to the inflator, the HPS air bags may have insufficient inflation during a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Head Protection System, free of charge. The recall began on June 24, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Reported: 2016-09-21 (September 21, 2016)

BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 BMW X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, X3 xDrive28d, X4 xDrive28i and X4 xDrive35i vehicles, and model year 2014-2015 X5 xDrive35i, X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, and 2014 X5 xDrive35d vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.

Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator housing could separate from the base plate and result in metal striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's front air bag, free of charge. The recall began on November 1, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Reported: 2018-10-25 (October 25, 2018)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Consequence: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Consequence: A melting intake manifold increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. This recall includes all vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755.
