MY BROTHER IN LAW AND I JUST PURCHASED NEW 2010 BMW R1200RT MOTORCYCLES FROM TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS. WE RODE THEM OVER 600 MILES. WHILE RIDING THE BIKES THE ENGINE WOULD DIE WITHOUT ANY REASON. HIS DIED TWO TIMES AND MINE DIED FIVE TIMES, UNRELATED TO ANY SPECIFIC GEAR, OR RIDING CONDITION, ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. AFTER RETURNING FROM THE TRIP WE TOOK OUR BIKES TO THE BMW DEALER FOR SERVICE....EXPLAINED THE TROUBLE...THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID HE WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THAT THERE WAS A BMW RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM...BUT HE DIDN…

THE BRAKES AT THE REAR WHEEL LOCKED UP. FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT TRAVELING AT SPEED BUT HAD STOPPED TO GET GAS. IT WAS AT THE PUMP THAT I DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE HAD LOCKED UP. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR SIX WEEKS AND THAT TO ME IS AN INDICATION THAT THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN SUFFICIENTLY REPORTED. AT THE PUMP I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND I OVERSHOT A LITTLE BIT. A VERY LITTLE AND I COULD HAVE FILLED THE TANK AT THE PLACE. BUT NONE THE LESS I THINK I'LL BACK UP A LITTLE TO GET CLOSER TO THE PUMP. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT I COULD…

ENGINE HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE NEW. THIRD TIME IN FOR THIS PROBLEM IN A YEAR. THIS CONDITION CREATES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. IF IT WORSENS, IT WILL SUBSTANTIALLY IMPAIR THE USE OR VALUE OF MY MOTORCYCLE. OCCURS WITH CLUTCH IN OR OUT, IN GEAR & IN NEUTRAL. HAPPENS AT IDLE & AT VARIOUS SPEEDS UP TO 50 MPH. HAPPENS AS SOON AS AFTER FIVE MINUTES OF RIDING OR AFTER AN HOUR OF RIDING. HAPPENS WITH ONE OR TWO RIDERS. *TR

APPALLED TO DISCOVER THAT EVEN THE REPUTABLE BMW NO LONGER STANDS BEHIND ITS PRODUCTS! ABOUT 3 YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL PURCHASE (BRAND NEW) FROM AN AUTHORIZED BMW DEALER, RODE MY BMW FOR THE 1ST TIME, ON A RAINY DAY. THE NEXT DAY, BEFORE LEAVING MY GARAGE(I ALWAYS PARKED THIS BIKE IN A COVERED GARAGE) I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT TURN SIGNAL WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. THE 4 WAY SIGNAL/HAZARD WAS OK THOUGH. ONE WEEK LATER, WHILE RIDING IT FOR THE 2ND TIME IN RAIN, I'VE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE HORN, LEFT & RIGHT TURN SIGNALS, ELECTRICAL…

Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

09V471000 · Engine And Engine Cooling

Reported: 2009-12-10 (December 10, 2009)

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 K1300 S AND K1300 GT MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 AND NOVEMBER 19, 2009. POOR FUEL QUALITY MAY LEAD TO SMALL DEPOSITS WITHIN THE THROTTLE BODIES. DURING ENGINE OPERATION IN A LOW RPM RANGE, TYPICALLY NEAR IDLE SPEED (WHEN COMING TO A STOP) AIR FLOW COULD BE SUFFICIENTLY RESTRICTED AND ENGINE STALLING COULD OCCUR.

Consequence: ENGINE STALLING COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPAIR THE MOTORCYCLES BY UPDATING THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW TOLL-FREE AT 1-800-831-1117.

Reported: 2010-10-08 (October 8, 2010)

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2011 MOTORCYCLES. THE BEARINGS COULD BE SUBJECT TO CORROSION. THIS COULD LEAD TO REDUCED MOVEMENT OF THE LINK LEVER.

Consequence: THIS COULD AFFECT THE HANDLING OF THE MOTORCYCLE INCREASING THE RISK A DRIVER MAY LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE RESULTING IN A CRASH.

Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.
