Owner report 10167526 · 2006-09-07 (September 7, 2006)

THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A BMW K1200LT MOTORCYCLE. THIS BIKE USES TWO QUICK-DISCONNECT COUPLINGS IN THE FUEL LINES NEAR THE FUEL TANK. THESE CONNECTORS ARE MADE OF A PLASTIC-LIKE MATERIAL THAT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO CRACKING. WHEN SUCH A FAILURE OCCURS (THEY ARE COMMON), THE PRESSURIZED FUEL SPRAYS AROUND UNDER THE DECORATIVE COVERS OF THE BIKE WITHOUT ANY WARNING OTHER THAN THE ODOR OF FUEL AND VISUALLY DETECTABLE LEAKS. IF LEFT UNDETECTED, THERE IS A SERIOUS RISK OF FIRE WHILE THE MOTORCYCLE IS BEING RIDDEN. BMW OFFERS TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE CONNE…

Owner report 10246835 · 2008-10-27 (October 27, 2008)

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 BMW K1200LT. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE O-RING IN THE FUEL LINE QUICK-DISCONNECT COUPLING FAILED. AS A CONSEQUENCE, FUEL BEGAN LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V028000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS); THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSUME FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR. SECONDLY, HE BELIEVES THAT THE REMEDY FOR THE REPAIR IS INSUFFICIENT BECAUSE IT ONLY REQUIRES THE TECHNICIANS TO ADJUST ALL CRIM…

Owner report 10118078 · 2005-04-19 (April 19, 2005)

I WAS DRIVING A 2002 BMW K1200LT MOTORCYCLE. I HAS SPENT THE DAY DRIVING AROUND TOWN, LOCALLY AT AVERAGE CITY SPEEDS & IN AVERAGE TRAFFIC. WHILE SLOWING TO INITIATE A TURN I DOWN SHIFTED INTO 1ST GEAR WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LINKAGE SNAPPED. THIS LEFT THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER DANGLING LOOSELY. WHILE STUCK IN 1ST GEAR, I DROVE MY VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP. THE REPAIR TOOK A WHOLE WEEK SINCE THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO ORDER PARTS. THE PARTS, SUPPOSEDLY COMING FROM GERMANY, DID NOT GET TO THE DEALERSHIP IN TIME. THEY HAD TO TAKE THE PARTS FROM ANOTHER VEH…

Owner report 762915 · 2002-06-11 (June 11, 2002)

I BOUGHT MOTORCYCLE USED JUST RECENTLY FROM A PRIVATE OWNER. WHEN TEMPERATURES STARTED REACHING UP TO 90 DEGREES AND ABOVE, THE THROTTLE BECAME VERY HESITANT WHEN DOING A SLOW ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE, THEN SURGE FORWARD A COUPLE TIMES.. EVEN WHEN HOLDING THE THROTTLE CONSTANT. THIS HAS PUT ME IN DANGEROUS SITUATIONS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS LIKE WHEN MAKING TURNS FROM A STOP AND THE BIKE DOES NOT KEEP THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCE TO HOLD THE BIKE UP BECAUSE IT HESITATES, OR WHEN ACCELERATING IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC OR IN BUSY CITY STREETS…

Owner report 10025802 · 2003-07-10 (July 10, 2003)

THIS COMPLAINT IS ABOUT A BMW K1200LTS: IT IS TOP HEAVY AND WILL GET AWAY FROM THE OPERATOR AND ROLL OVER (STANDING STILL OR DURING A VERY SLOW MANEUVER): IN SHORT IF IT EXCEEDS ITS VIRTICAL BALANCE IT WILL FLOP OVER SLAMING THE OPERATOR ONTO THE PAVEMENT. *AK . I CALLED NORMAND BRODEUR, (MANAGER DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM, UNDER STATE OF MAINE, SECRETARY OF STATE, BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES) AND ASKED HIM IF HE KNEW ABOUT THIS MOTORCYCLE AND HE TOLD ME HE'D OPERATED ONE AND THAT THEY ARE "TOP-HEAVY". HE KINDLY SENT ME A WORK BOOK T…
