Owner report 10218926 · 2008-02-23 (February 23, 2008)
MY 2006 YAMAHA STAR ROADLINER S STARTED MAKING A NOTICEABLE CLATTERING NOISE IN 3RD GEAR SHORTLY BEFORE I HAD 18,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE MY 2001 YAMAHA ROAD STAR DID BEFORE A DEALER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE TEETH MISSING FROM ONE OF THE GEARS IN IT'S TRANSMISSION. I TOOK THE BIKE TO RIDE NOW SURPRISE (A YAMAHA DEALER) AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE NOISE IS NORMAL. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE BIKE DID NOT MAKE THE NOISE FOR THE FIRST 17,000 MILES. I CALLED YAMAHA CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING AND THAT…

THIRD GEAR IN MY 2006 STRATOLINER "S" IS COMPLETELY USELESS. THE GEAR HAS EITHER SEVERELY WORN ITSELF OR IS CHIPPED. WHEN IN GEAR (FROM 25-35MPH) THE TRANSMISSION PRODUCES A SEVERE WHINE AND GRINDING SOUND. YAMAHA AND THE DEALERSHIP CLAIM THERE IS NO "WIDESPREAD" ISSUE HOWEVER I AM IN CONTACT WITH FIVE OTHER 2006 STRATOLINER OWNERS WHO HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! *TR

Owner report 10166258 · 2006-08-22 (August 22, 2006)
I WAS RIDING HOME FROM CINCINNATI ON MY 2005 YAMAHA ROAD STAR GOING WESTBOUND ON INTERSTATE 74. I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN MY V-TWIN ENGINE INSTANTLY LOST POWER. THE SEMI IN THE PASSING LANE BEHIND ME HAD TO LOCK UP HIS BRAKES CAUSING ALL WESTBOUND TRAFFIC TO COME TO A STAND STILL. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, NOBODY GOT HURT THIS TIME. I HAD THE BIKE TOWED HOME SO I COULD INSPECT WHY THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. AFTER REMOVING REAR CYLINDER HEAD, I FOUND SLUDGE ON ONE OF THE EXHAUST VALVES AND THE VALVE WAS STICKING. THIS IS …

POSSIBLE FAILURE OF VALVES IN REAR CYLINDER OF THE YAMAHA ROAD STAR CAUSING AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER. THIS CAN (AND HAS) PUT THE DRIVER AND / OR PASSENGER IN DANGER. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THESE MOTORCYCLES FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND YAMAHA HAS DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT IT OR PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING. *JB

Owner report 10862386 · 2016-05-01 (May 1, 2016)
I AM GETTING A LOUD CLACKING AND WHINE FROM THE TRANSMISSION IN 3RD GEAR. THIS IS THE ONLY GEAR THAT IS DOING IT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING APART! I AM AFRAID TO RIDE IT VERY FAR BECAUSE IT MIGHT BRAKE AND LOCK UP MY DRIVE TRAIN WHEN I AM AT SPEED ON THE INTERSTATE AND IT CAUSE ME TO CRASH! THIS HAPPENS WHEN I AM GOING THROUGH THE GEARS, 1ST TO 2ND THEN TO 3RD AND ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. IF I GO ON TO 4TH GEAR IT STOPS AND THE SAME WITH 5TH GEAR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IF THIS GEAR BREAKS WHILE I AM RIDING, TO BE PREPARED FOR THE TRANSM…
