IT IS WITH THE UTMOST CONCERN THAT I, AS AN OWNER OF A 2002 YAMAHA ROAD STAR, PROVIDE THIS COMMUNICATION TO YOU AND THE YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, USA. IT HAS BEEN KNOWN THAT A PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE TRANSMISSION, WHEREBY AT UNEXPECTED TIMES THE TRANSMISSION LOCKS, WHICH CAN AND HAS CAUSED LOSS OF CONTROL BY THE RIDER, THEREBY ENDANGERING THE SAFETY AND LIFE OF THE RIDER, PASSENGER, AND OTHER VEHICLES, PASSENGERS, AND PEDESTRIANS IN THE AREA. THE OCCURRENCE OF THE TRANSMISSION LOCKING UP HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED BY MEMBERS OF THE ROAD STAR RIDERS FO…

Owner report 10028536 · 2003-07-17 (July 17, 2003)

I OWN A 2002 YAMAHA ROAD STAR WARRIOR. THE FUEL "QUICK DISCONNECTS" ARE IN MY OPINION, DESIGNED & ENGINEERED VERY POORLY. THEY VIBRATE OFF THE SEAT. THEY HAVE NEVER LEAKED FUEL, THE LOCKING TAB MAKES IT STAY LOCKED SO IT WON'T LEAK. HOWEVER, WHEN IT IS AGAINST THE LOCKING TAB, IT MOVES OFF ITS SEAT ABOUT 3/16" AND RESULTS IN NO FUEL FLOW FROM THE UPPER TANK TO THE LOWER TANK WHERE THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP IS. THAT RESULTS IN A "STALL" SITUATION. I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT WAITING FOR IT TO TURN GREEN, I STARTED OUT AS I ALWAYS DO. I WAS AT 8 M…

Owner report 10029100 · 2003-07-24 (July 24, 2003)

I HAVE A 2002 YAMAHA ROAD STAR WARRIOR. I BOUGHT THE MOTORCYCLE NEW FROM THE DEALER AS A 2002 LEFTOVER IN MAY OF 2003. A FEW WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THE MOTORCYCLE, I WAS RIDING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE BIKE STARTED TO SLOW DOWN ON ITS OWN. BEING A FEW MILES FROM A FRIEND'S HOUSE, I DECIDED IT WOULD BE SAFER TO STOP THERE, SO I CONTINUED ON TO HIS HOUSE. WHEN I PULLED IN THE DRIVEWAY, I NOTICED MY REAR BRAKE ROTOR WAS GLOWING RED AND THE WHOLE CALIPER WAS SMOKING AND HOT. THE BRAKE LINE MELTED AND LEAKED FLUID ON THE HOT CALIPER AND THEN CAUGHT …

Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

02V181000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly:Mounting

Reported: 2002-07-23 (July 23, 2002)

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE FUEL TANK BRACKET WASHER AND DAMPER DO NOT ADEQUATELY PROTECT THE TANK FROM ENGINE VIBRATION.

Consequence: OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, VIBRATION MIGHT DAMAGE THE TANK WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FUEL LEAK WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK BRACKET WASHER AND DAMPER WITH ONES OF A NEW TYPE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 10,2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-88-YAMAHA (1-800-889-2624).

03V309000 · Power Train:Manual Transmission

Reported: 2003-08-26 (August 26, 2003)

IN THE TRANSMISSION ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE SECOND/THIRD PINION GEAR MAY BE INCORRECTLY MACHINED WHICH COULD CAUSE ABNORMAL WEAR THAT EVENTUALLY RESULTS IN A BROKEN RETAINER CIRCLIP.

Consequence: IF THE CIRCLIP BREAKS, THE TRANSMISSION COULD LOCK UP, WHICH WOULD ALSO CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOCK UP. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: YAMAHA WILL REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION GEARS AND SHAFTS WITH NEW ONES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-88-YAMAHA OR VISIT THEIR WEBSITE AT WWW.YAMAHA-MOTOR.COM.
