2004 MASTERCRAFT TRAILER WITH GOODYEAR MARATHON ST225/75R/15 TRAILER TIRES AT PROPER INFLATION REQUIREMENTS AND TOWING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. LEFT SIDE TIRE BLEW AT HIGHWAY SPEED. 1HR LATER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, RIGHT SIDE SHOWED SIGNS OF IMPENDING TIRE FAILURE...WHICH WAS CONFIRMED AFTER TIRE REPLACEMENT AT TIRE SHOP. BOTH FAILED TIRES WERE CHINESE MADE GOODYEAR MARATHONS. OLD PARTS: 1ST TIRE FAILURE IS NOT AVAILABLE, 2ND FAILURE TIRE IS AVAILABLE. Reported: 2006-03-08 (March 8, 2006)
CERTAIN TRAILERS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 223, "REAR IMPACT GUARDS." PROPER REAR IMPACT GUARDS WERE NOT INSTALLED ON THESE TRAILERS.
Consequence: IF STRUCK IN THE REAR BY A SMALLER VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE MAY UNDERRIDE THE TRAILER INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE SMALLER VEHICLE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CORRECT REAR IMPACT GUARDS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 15, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHARLES MACHINE WORKS AT 580-572-2480.
