81V135000 · Power Train:Axle Assembly:Axle Shaft
Reported: 1981-10-27 (October 27, 1981)
THE COTTER PIN, WHICH IS USED TO SECURE THE REAR AXLE SHAFT LOCK NUT, MAY HAVE BEEN INADVERTENTLY OMITTED DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY. IF THE COTTER PIN IS MISSING, THE LOCK NUT COULD LOOSEN DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. THIS COULD LEAD TO A SEPARATION OF THE BRAKE DRUM/REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY FROM THE AXLE SHAFT.
Remedy: UPON INSPECTION, A COTTER PIN WILL BE INSTALLED IF MISSING AND THE LOCK NUT WILL BE PROPERLY SECURED WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

DURING A PISTON PIN MANUFACTURING PROCESS, CRACKS HAVE OCCURRED IN THE INNER SURFACE OF THE PIN. THESE CRACKS COULD LEAD TO COMPLETE BREAKAGE OF THE PIN, WHICH IN TURN COULD RESULT IN ENGINE FAILURE AND POSSIBLE SUDDEN ENGINE SEIZURE.
Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE PISTON PINS ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES AT NO COST TO OWNER.
NHTSA campaign record ↗82V061000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Exhaust System:Emission Control:Gas Recirculation Valve (Egr Valve)
