I WAS DRIVING A BUMPY ROADWAY AND THE REAR CROSSMEMBER OF MY 1997 F150 LARIAT CRACKED AND FELL AND WAS DRAGGING ON THE STREET. A 1/4 OF THE CROSSMEMBER IS STILL ATTACHED THE SHOCK AND SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE MEMBER AND THE FRAME. I HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND STRAP IT TO THE FRAME. THANK GOD MY SPARE TIRE IS NOT ATTACHED OR IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT HAD IT FALLEN WITH WHAT IS LEFT OF THE CROSS MEMBER. THE REMAINING THREE CORNERS OF THE CROSSMEMBER HAVE ALMOST SEPARATED FROM THE FRAME AND ARE SEVERELY ROTTED. THE FRAME APPEAR TO H…

97V066000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Drum:Drum
Reported: 1997-04-21 (April 21, 1997)
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: GLAVAL CONVERSION VANS AND PICKUP TRUCKS. THE RETAINER CLIPS WERE NOT REMOVED FROM THE REAR BRAKE DRUM WHEEL STUD BOLTS PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION OF A CUSTOM WHEEL.
Consequence: THE WHEEL CAN APPEAR TO BE OR CAN ACTUALLY GO OUT OF BALANCE AND COULD CRACK IN THE LUG NUT AREA INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEELS AND REMOVE THE RETAINER CLIPS IF STILL IN PLACE AND ALSO INSPECT WHEELS FOR CRACKS (INCLUDING THE FRONT WHEELS, IF THE TIRES HAVE BEEN ROTATED). IF THE WHEELS ARE CRACKED IN THE LUG NUT AREA, THE WHEELS WILL BE REPLACED.
