TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 DUCATI MULTISTRADA 1000S MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS BEGINNING TO DEFORM AND EXPAND DUE TO THE PLASTIC COMPOSITE MATERIAL IT WAS MANUFACTURER FROM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DIMENSIONS OF THE TANK HAD CHANGED AND THE BODY PANELS WERE NOT LINING UP PROPERLY. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS ADJACENT TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND OVER THE REAR WHEEL WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IF THE TANK CONTINUED TO DEFORM. 2005 DUCATI MULTISTRADA FUEL TANK EXPANDED TO SUCH A POINT IT COULD NOT BE REMOVED TO PERFORM THE REQUIRED ENGINE SERVICES. TANK WAS REPLACED 07-09. NEW TANK IS SHOWING SIGNS OF SAME PROBLEM. OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED LEAKING FUEL. IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE FUEL TANK BE REMOVABLE TO MAINTAIN THE ENGINE COMPONENTS. THE DEALER SAYS THAT DUCATI WILL REPLACE THE TANK AGAIN BUT THE QUESTION IS HOW MANY TIMES WILL THEY DO IT AS THE MODEL IS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION. *TR

MY MOTORCYCLE CAME WITH A POLYAMIDE PA6 GAS TANK WHICH EXPANDED. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE TANK INCREASED UNTIL IT DID NOT SIT CORRECTLY IN THE FRAME, THE HANDLEBAR SWITCH HIT THE TANK WHEN TURNED TO THE RIGHT, THE FRONT SUSPENSION FORK TUBE HIT THE TANK WHEN STEERED TO THE LEFT, AND THE TANK BECAME NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT AND REAR BODYWORK PANELS, WHICH ATTACH TO THE TANK, BEGAN TO BECOME DAMAGED AT THEIR ATTACHMENT POINTS DUE TO THE PRESSURE ON THEM FROM THE EXPANDING TANK. I HAVE NOT SIGNI…

11V020000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 2011-01-24 (January 24, 2011)

DUCATI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 MULTISTRADA 620, MODEL YEAR 2003-2006, MULTISTRADA 1000, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2009, MULTISTRADA 1100 MOTORCYCLES. FUEL LEAKAGE CAN OCCUR AT THE FUEL TANK PUMP FLANGE SEAL.

Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP O-RING WITH AN UPDATED PART FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DUCATI AT 800-231-6696.
