FRAME CRACKING IS A PROBLEM WITH DUCATI 900CC MOTORCYCLES. IT IS A REGULAR TOPIC OF DISCUSSION ON THE WEB SITES AND ON GROUP RIDES. DEPENDING ON LOCATION AND MILAGE THE DEALER REACTION HAS VARIED FROM WARRENTIED FRAME REPLACEMENT TO DENIAL OF MANUFACTURER FAULT. WHILE I HAVE NOT EXPERIANCED THIS FAULT MYSELF, IT IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH THAT I BELIEVE T SHOULD BE REPORTED AND INVESTIGATED.

THE MAIN FRAME OF THE MOTORCYCLE CRACKED ACROSS THE UPPER FRAME TUBES AT THE WELDS WHERE THE STEARING HEAD IS ATTACHED TO THE REMAINDER OF THE FRAME. BECAUSE I NOTICED THE DAMAGE BEFORE COMPLETE FAILURE OCCURED THERE WERE NO INJURIES. HAD COMPLETE FAILURE OCCURED THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD HAVE BEEN UN CONTROLABLE. SUBSEQUENT TO MY DISCOVERY OF THE DAMMAGE I DISCOVERED THAT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE HAS OCCURED IN THE PAST WITH MANY OTHER 900SS MODEL DUCATIS. Reported: 1997-12-08 (December 8, 1997)

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. THE REAR BRAKE REACTION ROD NUT AND BOLT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE INCREASED BRAKING EFFORT.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE REACTION ROD NUT AND BOLT WITH A NEW MODIFIED NUT AND BOLT.
