THE CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO A GARAGE. *AK THE CONSUMER STARTED THAT VEHICLE, TOUCHED THE ACCELERATOR TO EASE OUT OF PARK WHEN THE ENGINE RACED. THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD INTO THE PARKED VEHICLE. *SC

WHILE BRAKING AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH THE VEHICLE VIBRATED SEVERELY. *NM THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND CONSEQUENTLY THE CONSUMER REAR ENDED A 18-WHEELER WHICH WAS AT A STOP. 03V332000 · Latches/Locks/Linkages:Hood:Latch

Reported: 2003-09-08 (September 8, 2003)

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERNAL HOOD LATCH COMPONENT MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED WITH A CRACK, WHICH COULD PROPAGATE AND BREAK, ALLOWING THE PRIMARY/SECONDARY LATCH SPRING TO DISENGAGE.

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY HOOD LATCH FUNCTION, ALLOWING THE HOOD TO OPEN WITHOUT WARNING. THIS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE LATCH ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-992-1997.
