Owner report 11090516 · 2018-04-27 (April 27, 2018)

ACCORDING TO BMW LITERATURE, UNDER APPROPRIATE CONDITIONS, THE DRIVER IS TO BE ALERTED BY MEANS OF VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING WHEEL OF EITHER UNINTENTIONAL LANE CHANGES OR VEHICLES IN THE DRIVER'S BLIND SPOT WHILE SIGNALING A TURN. IN MY 540I, I CAN DETECT NO STEERING WHEEL VIBRATIONS AT ALL WITH THE 'LIGHT' AND 'MEDIUM' VIBRATION SETTINGS. WITH THE 'STRONG' SETTING, I CAN SOMETIMES DETECT A VERY SLIGHT VIBRATION ' IF I PAY CLOSE ATTENTION ' BUT IT IS VERY HARD TO DISTINGUISH FROM ROAD SURFACE FEEDBACK. IN ANY EVENT, THE "INTELLIGENT SAFETY SYS…

RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE ON BMW 540I 2018, WITH 10600 MILES. PURCHASED AS FACTORY DEMO A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AGO. WILL BE TAKING IT TO SERVICE SOON. HOWEVER I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A LONG STANDING ISSUE WITH BMW-S THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT CORRECTING OR ISSUING RECALLS.

Owner report 11110925 · 2018-07-12 (July 12, 2018)

FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW, MY CAR HAS BEEN THROWING A "PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" ERROR. IT HAPPENS SPORADICALLY AND ONLY STAYS UP FOR BETWEEN 1 AND 5 MINUTES AT A TIME. IT WILL HAPPEN WHETHER THE CAR IS MOVING OR NOT, AND EVEN SOMETIMES AS SOON AS I TURN THE CAR ON. I HAVE BEEN SUBMITTING THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SINCE IT STARTED. I TRIED TO HAVE IT FIXED BY THOMPSON BMW, ONLY TO BE TOLD, LIKE THE OTHER USER WHO HAS THIS PROBLEM ON HERE, THAT THEY THINK MOISTURE IS THE CULPRIT. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY RAIN OR ANY OTHER MOISTURE GET INTO THE…

Owner report 11111740 · 2018-07-16 (July 16, 2018)

THE REAR CROSS-TRAFFIC/PEDESTRIAN ALERT SYSTEM IS DYSFUNCTIONAL. I HAVE HAD TWO OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS FEATURE AND AM QUITE FAMILIAR WITH IT. THIS VEHICLE IS INCAPABLE OF EFFECTIVELY DETECTING AND WARNING OF APPROACHING REAR TRAFFIC AND/OR (AND WORSE) PEDESTRIANS. REPEATED EFFORTS TO HAVE MY BMW DEALER ADDRESS IT HAVE BEEN FRUITLESS. BMW USA SIMPLY CIRCLES ME BACK TO THE SAME DEALER WHO IS UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. THE NET RESULT IS "SAFELY TECHNOLOGY" THAT, IF RELIED UPON, HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

WHEN BRAKING TO COME TO A STOP AT A LIGHT, THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO OVER 5000 RPM. I HAD TO SHUT OFF THE CAR TO GET IT TO STOP. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON, IT IMMEDIATELY REVVED UP TO OVER 7000, WHILE I STOOD ON THE BRAKE TO PREVENT IT FROM MOVING. SHUT IT OFF AGAIN, PUT FLASHERS ON AND WAITED A MINUTE. RESTARTED AND IT PERFORMED NORMALLY.

Owner report 11460740 · 2022-04-14 (April 14, 2022)

The vehicle was at a complete stop, when the gas pedal was tapped to move forward slightly the vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control. There was an attempt to apply the brakes, but the vehicle continued to accelerate and "Drive Train Malfunction" began to flash on the dashboard of the vehicle. The vehicle proceeded to accelerate as it jumped a curb, crashed into a ditch, before finally becoming lodged in a fence and coming to a complete stop when half of the vehicle was lifted off of the ground. The driver of the vehicle suffered a frac…

Owner report 11480988 · 2022-08-24 (August 24, 2022)

Passenger seat indicator light keeps going off intermittently. Dealer says its a seat pad issue. We identified it in 2018 but dealer was not able to fix it and it continually keeps happening and didn't do anything because dealer did not fix it at that time. Now dealer is re-diagonising it saying it is a different diagnostic code but we have seen the same issue since we got the car. After reasearching this, there was a recall in 2017 with similar issues. It is related to the sensor and if not properly working, the airbags may not deploy whe…

Reported: 2018-07-11 (July 11, 2018)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 BMW 540d xDrive vehicles. The crankshaft sensor may be equipped with incorrect firmware, preventing the sensor from properly processing input from the crankshaft reluctor ring, possibly resulting in a vehicle stall. On September 12, 2018, BMW expanded the recall to a total of 5,309 vehicles including certain 2018-2019 BMW 540d xDrive, 230i M240i, M240i xDrive, X2 sDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i, X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 330i, 330i xDrive, 340i, 340i xDrive, 330i xDrive Gran Turismo, 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, 530e, 530e xDrive, 640i xDrive Gran Turismo, 330e, 2019 430i Gran Coupe, 430i xDrive Gran Coupe, 440i Gran Coupe, 440i xDrive Gran Coupe, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, 740i, 740i xDrive, MINI Cooper, Cooper S, JCW, MINI Countryman (Cooper, Cooper All4, Cooper S, Cooper S All4, JCW All4), and MINI Clubman (Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper All4, Cooper S All4, JCW All4) vehicles.

Consequence: A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor, free of charge. The recall began September 6, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the back-up camera software, free of charge. The recall began November 8, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce at 1-877-877-3735. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
