Owner report 10788493 · 2015-11-05 (November 5, 2015)

I HIT A PIECE OF TRUCK TIRE DEBRIS ON I-495N IN MARLBORO MA AT NIGHT AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP AND INSPECT FOR DAMAGE DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC. ALL SEEMED OK. 15 MINUTES LATER IN CHELMSFORD MA, THE CAR GAVE "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION, REDUCED POWER, DRIVE GENTLY" MESSAGE AND CONTINUED TO LOSE POWER AND SLOW DOWN. I PULLED OVER SAFELY TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND THEN THE ENGINE STOPPED AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED AGAIN. TIRE DEBRIS FROM EARLIER RUPTURED PART OF THE FUEL SYSTEM AND CAUSED THE CAR TO DUMP DIESEL FUEL ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE ENGINE EVENTUALLY…

Owner report 10930000 · 2016-12-05 (December 5, 2016)

ON 12/03/2016, MY 2014 BMW 535D ABRUPTLY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, BLOCKING TRAFFIC. IT HAD SPONTANEOUSLY LOCKED ITSELF INTO 'PARK' WITHOUT WARNING. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START, AND THERE WAS NO WAY TO OVERCOME THE ELECTRONIC LOCK ON THE TRANSMISSION AND PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO 'NEUTRAL' TO PUSH THE CAR OUT OF TRAFFIC. IT HAD TO BE TOWED. FORTUNATELY THIS HAPPENED ON A SLOW MOVING ROAD. ON A FAST HIGHWAY, THIS EVENT WOULD HAVE POSED A MORTAL HAZARD. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF A VEHICLE THAT BECOMES DYSFUNCTIONAL IN THAT WAY. O…

Owner report 11019802 · 2017-08-25 (August 25, 2017)

THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM IN MY CAR FAILED AT 70MPH ON A CROWDED HIGHWAY ON 8/24/2017. THE DASHBOARD ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. THE CAR COASTED TO A STOP IN A DANGEROUS LOCATION. THERE WAS NO WAY FOR THE CAR TO BE PUT INTO NEUTRAL SO THAT IT COULD BE PUSHED TO A SAFE LOCATION. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED IN ONE OF THESE CARS IF BMW ISN'T MADE TO FIX THE PROBLEM

Owner report 11048256 · 2017-11-24 (November 24, 2017)

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP (E.G., FROM A STOP SIGN, RED LIGHT, OR MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY), THE CAR ACCELERATES NORMALLY FOR A SECOND OR SO AND THEN ACTS AS IF THE FUEL SUPPLY WAS CUT OFF (OR AS IF IT RUNS ONLY ON ONE CYLINDER) AND SLOWS DOWN TO ALMOST A STANDSTILL. SEVERAL SECONDS THEREAFTER IT PICKS UP SPEED AGAIN AND THEN THE MESSAGE 'DRIVE MODERATELY. MAXIMUM DRIVETRAIN OUTPUT NOT AVAILABLE. CONSULT SERVICE CENTER.' APPEARS. THIS HAPPENED INITIALLY TWICE IN MAY 2017 (ONCE TO ME, ANOTHER TIME TO MY WIFE). THE CAR WAS FOR 10 DAYS AT THE…

MY 2014 CERTIFIED PRE-OWN BMW 535D CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK LAST WEEK, FORTUNATELY A DRIVER NEXT TO ME ALERTED ME THAT MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. I PULLED OVER WITHIN 30 SECONDS, GOT OUT AND WITHIN ANOTHER 30 SECONDS MY ENTIRE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES.

Owner report 11109988 · 2018-07-07 (July 7, 2018)

I WAS DRIVING ON A FREEWAY IN CA, THE ENGINE STALLED SUDDENLY, AND TRANSMISSION WENT INTO TO PARK WHILEI WAS IN TRAFFIC. THERE IS NO WAY TO OVERRIDE THE ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION FROM IN THE CAR; ONLY WAY TO GET IT INTO NEUTRAL IS FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE (NOT ACCESSIBLE UNLESS ON A LIFT AND NOT POSSIBLE ON A BUSY FREEWAY). THIS IS A SHOCKINGLY BAD DESIGN AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I WAS A "DEAD DUCK" IN TRAFFIC. FINALLY FOUND A FLATBED WHO COULD PLACE THE REAR WHEELS ON A DOLLY AND PUT THE CAR UP ON A FLATBED (THIS WAS THE 4TH TOWING COMPAN…

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 BMW 535D. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD NOT BE MOVED OFF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME AND THEN TO THE DEALER (PACIFIC BMW, 800 S BRAND BLVD, GLENDALE, CA 91204, [phone removed]). THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A FAULTY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, WHICH RELEASED METAL FRAGMENTS THROUGH THE SYSTEM. THE CAR'S ENGINEER LIGHT CAME ON, SO IT WAS SENT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THE INDICATED REPAIR ITEM WAS A CONTROL SENSOR. I PICKED UP THE CAR AFTER REPAIR IN THE MORNING OF 11/7. THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE. AROUND LUNCH TIME THE SAME DAY, JUST AS I WAS GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE STARTED TO SPUTTER VIOLENTLY. LUCKILY, I WAS STILL ON THE RIGHT LANE. I QUICKLY TURNED TOWARDS THE SHOULDER BEFORE THE CAR DIED COMPLETELY. ALL OF THIS HAPPENED WITHIN LESS THAN A MINUTE. THE CAR CAN NOT BE PUT TO NEUTRAL TO BE MOVED. THE EMERGENCY L…

18V755000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Exhaust System:Emission Control:Gas Recirculation Valve (Egr Valve)

Reported: 2018-10-25 (October 25, 2018)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Consequence: The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
