Reported: 2002-11-12 (November 12, 2002) · Model years: 2001, 2002

CERTAIN SHUTTLE BUSES EQUIPPED WITH 2 REAR WHEEL CHAIR AND FLIP SEATS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THE FLIP SEAT INSTALLED ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE BUS PARTIALLY OBSCURES THE REAR EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW'S RELEASE HANDLE AND OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTION LABEL.

Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, AN OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY EXIT THE VEHICLE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN EMERGENCY WINDOW EXIT LABEL TO THE WINDOW. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 13, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT STARCRAFT BUS AT 1-800-348-7440.
