The timing of the trailer brake release may be delayed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

Consequence: A delay in the trailer brake release can create instability to the trailer and increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the fittings and hoses in the affected valves, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 15, 2024. The methane detection system will not function if the system loses power.

Consequence: The operator may be unaware of a system malfunction or the presence of excessive methane levels, increasing the risk of injury or fire.

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling one 2021 Peterbilt 536 vehicle equipped with a Cummins Westport Inc. B6.7N engine that has certain engine control module calibrations. The engine control module software may be calibrated incorrectly, causing the engine to not limit engine speed or torque as intended for certain safety-related functions such as vehicle braking, traction and stability control, speed control, or collision avoidance.

Consequence: If safety-related functions such as vehicle braking, stability, speed, and collision avoidance do not function properly, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

When the brake pedal is fully applied and then released rapidly, the pedal plunger that connects the brake pedal to the brake valve may become disconnected, causing the service brakes to fail.

Consequence: Service brake failure can increase the risk of a crash.

The right-hand gear shifter stalk connectors may have been improperly crimped, resulting in a loss of communication.

Consequence: A loss of communication between the gear shifter and the transmission may result in the vehicle becoming disabled after coming to a stop, increasing the risk of a crash.

Consequence: Loose fasteners may allow the driveline to separate from the truck, increasing the risk of a crash.

Consequence: Safety systems that depend on the ECU (Automatic Traction Control, ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Active Cruise Control, and Collison Mitigation System) may not function properly or at all, increasing the risk of a crash.

The exterior lighting switch may fail, resulting in the hazard lights and the instrument display back-light brightness adjustment not functioning. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment."

Consequence: Inoperative hazard lights cannot alert other drivers as intended. In addition, the inability to adjust the brightness on the instrument panel display can make it difficult to see critical safety information or distract the driver. Both scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) software, free of charge. Owners are advised that a non-responsive switch can be temporarily reset by a key cycle. The tail brake light, upper and lower beam headlights, reverse light, and turn signal may not illuminate as intended. In addition, the lift axles, if lowered, may revert to a raised position, or oscillate up and down when the signal warning lights are activated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment."

Consequence: Delayed and unsteady headlights can result in insufficient illumination of the road, decreasing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, an unexpected position change of the lift axles may increase the risk of injury.

The tie rod or drag link assembly may contain an improperly heat-treated ball stud, causing the ball stud to break.

Consequence: Insufficient lubrication may cause the wheel hub to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire, or result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2027 Peterbilt and Kenworth vehicles. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. The power distribution center (PDC) box may be contaminated with oil, which could result in a loss of drive power, Antilock Brake System (ABS) functionality, exterior lighting, windshield wipers, or the defogging system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems," 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems," and 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Consequence: A loss of lighting, windshield wipers, ABS function, or a loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the PDC serial numbers, and replace the PDC boxes as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed September 25, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available.
